The July 15 issue of Interactive Publishing Alert is now available.
Here are the highlights:
* Should You Be an Internet Access Provider?
With the Internet access market expected to grow from $521.41
million this year to more than $4 billion by the year 2000, it's no
surprise that newspaper publishers everywhere are scrambling to
become Internet access providers. But, like most hot deals, there's
a catch. The Internet access market has become glutted, and the
industry is poised on the brink of a shakeout. Publishers should be
wary of any venture that offers quick returns today -- and the risk
of writeoffs tomorrow.
* IPA Testlab: Pilot Online (Internet)
Pilot Online is raking in revenues using two methods that many
newspapers have shunned -- selling Internet access and designing Web
pages for adve rtisers. Although the online paper's access revenues
(projected at close to $100,000 for 1995) may soon dry up in the face
of plunging prices and heightened competition, add it to the roughly
$100,000 that Pilot Online generates through selling ads and
designing Web pages and you're looking at a newspaper that's building
a viable short-term economic model while also preparing for the
future.
Rating: 8
* Publisher's View: Gordon Borrell of InfiNet
"Why should a newspaper put its valuable content such as news,
classified ads, archives, etc. online for free, and let some guy in
garage sell access to it just because he's an Internet provider? The
newspaper should be in this business right now because the dollars
are there. To say that it'll be too competitive or too complicated
for a newspaper to get involved in this business is like trying to
convince a newspaper 400 years ago that a printing press was too
complicated and too messy for them to ever own."
