When one is the victim of a violent crime, one will react based on 
whatever instincts are available at the time.  I've been raped, I've had 
a Viet-Nam Vet put a Colt 45 to my head and smile as he offered to kill me 
after I emptied the safe.  There were those who said I should have bit the 
rapists "thing" off.  There were those who thought I should have dove for 
the burgler alarm and hope that he wouldn't pull the trigger.  The rapist 
could have killed me just as easily as the Vet.

You did what you did.  You survived.  You could do no better, you did no 
worse.  He beat you because he wanted to beat a woman (maybe not even 
you).  You fought, because you thought that would make him stop.  Many 
women don't fight back and beat themselves up because they didn't fight 
back.  Either way, the crime lives like it was happening now, until you 
put it in the past, and carry the support you've received from others 
(victims groups, other women, ...) into your life as you engage in a 
future without rapists and the flashbacks.

Well RAMBO! Which branch of RANGER school did you come from!  Or was it 
the SEALS, or the GREEN BARETs?  Have you ever had a man put a gun to 
your face (or any other significant part of your anatomy for that 
matter)?  Anyone capable of pulling a weapon has learned to gain your 
trust enough that he can be sure you won't be able to get your weapon 
before he is absolutely certain of the outcome.  It isn't even the same 
as WAR!  In war, the enemy usually wears a uniform.  If you see that 
uniform, you know he's going to kill you, you don't wait for him to 
appear.  Of course, there were always the Siagon Mama's, who would sleep 
with a man, before they pulled the pin on the grenade that would wipe out 
the barracks.  I know many women who would love to take similar sanctions 
here in this country.
 
Do you think this smelly, slimy, grease-ball from skid-row came up to 
Purity from two blocks away and said "I'm going to give you the ___ing
you really need"?  It don't work like that!  By the time Purity pulled 
her little baretta (or even her 38) out of her purse/bag, the man who had 
managed to get close enough to rape her would have had little trouble 
breaking her arm before she got her finger to the trigger.  Given 
Purity's description, he might have even forced her to shoot herself!
