Actually, I think it became fairly public that something was in the air when
The Hearst Corporation, Knight-Ridder, The Times Mirror Company and others
all announced that they were investing in Netscape. Also, there have been
varying reports about the various chains getting together to discuss their
disatisfaction with the current online opportunities.

An early indication of the Netscape deal as well as the roots of NCN would
be the "Inside Media " (Cowles Business Media) story on March 29 by John
Motavalli and Chuck Ross titled "Newspaper Consortium goes onto Web." In
this story, they talk about Tribune, Times Mirror, Washington Post,
Knight-Ridder and Newhouse having had discussions on this subject for over a
year. The story claims that the group was lead by Charles Brumback of
Tribune. It claims that the group was motivated by "these companies'
dissatisfaction with the financial terms offered them by America Online and
Prodigy."

The story may give some insight into why today's press release seemed to
stress that NCN was only for daily newspapers not weeklies or other media.
It was reported that the earlier conversations "foundered because Times
Mirror objected to a key part of the business plan that would have allowed
smaller newspaper gruops and media companies to participate in the effort."
