More re Vin Cosbie's comments on the AP's guidelines. The following is an
excerpt from President and CEO Louis D. Boccardi's speech at the AP Annual
Meeting this morning in New Orleans. 

"Meanwhile, the policy changes I referred to are these:

Present policy provides for six months' use of AP in your online database
without charge. We are extending that period of free use for two years.

Also we are lifting restrictions on the amount of AP news which members may
take from the wire for their own online projects. In other words, members
may use as much AP news as they wish in their own online projects.

We take both these steps to foster your experimentation with this new medium
as we work with you to determine how AP can best support it.

We believe the AP news report has value for you in these new projects but
until these new businesses take shape, the board and management believe that
it is best to suspend charges while we all advance toward a more certain
vision of the shape of this new business.

We ask members, of course, to continue to require all online subscribers to
agree to strict observation of the AP copyright, just as they do the
newspaper copyright.

None of the foregoing will affect products we specifically tailor for online
use, such as the AP Online wire, which will continue to be made available at
additional charge."
