How the Web Was Won

Hi everybody,

The home page team has created a quality graphical prototype. A link to this
new page appears at the top of the old home page. A pointer click on one of
the topics takes you to the associated page.

We owe a special thanks to Diane Mari of S&P's Marketing Group who graciously
volunteered a good deal of her time this past weekend to work up this page. I
think she did a beautiful job. Diane is also responsible for the Standard &
Poor's logo that had been on these pages for the last couple of weeks but
which has now been replaced by this new artwork.

Take a look when you have a moment and let me know what you think.

Happy Surfing-

Walt

Here are some technical details for those of you that take an interest in such
things:

*The image. The image is a non-interlaced gif file. The text, triangular
bullets, and yellow boxes where created in Adobe Illustrator. The image is a
stock photo scan, imported into and colored in PhotoShop. The text was
overlaid and the whole thing was exported in gif format. The graphic work was
done on an Apple Macintosh.

*The code. An image map controls what happens when you click on the image. The
image map consists of x,y coordinates that describe a series of contiguous
horizontal rectangular bands that (invisibly) surround the topics shown on the
page. Clicking within one of these invisible bands
takes you to the corresponding link. Here is a sample of the code:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#shape	link x,y x,y

rect	http://www.panix.com/~rhockens/finance.html	0,177 465,289

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since the shape is known in advance, only two sets of coordinates are
necessary to describe its location: in this example, the upper left corner and
the lower right corner.
