PDES stands for Product Data Exchange using STEP.  STEP is an
international standard (ISO 10303) for exchanging any kind of data
associated with a product throughout its life cycle.

STEP uses an information modeling language called EXPRESS for
representing information requirements for various application
protocols.  There is a group of people who are interested in comparing
EXPRESS with SGML and possibly using the two together in certain areas
of STEP.  NIST maintains a mailing list for people interested in this
topic.  To subscribe, send email to majordomo@cme.nist.gov, and in the
body of your message type "subscribe express-sgml".

If you have access to the World Wide Web, you can find out more about
PDES and STEP though the National Product Data Exchange Resource
Center home page at http://elib.nist.gov/nipde/Intro.html.  If you
don't have access to the web, let me know and I can get you other
forms of information.
